How to Choose an Earthwork Contractor in St. Louis

· 5 min read · By Kuesel Excavating Co.

Short answer: Pick an earthwork contractor that self-performs with its own equipment and crews, understands local clay soils and stormwater rules, prices to the plans with clear assumptions, and can show similar commercial work. The lowest number rarely stays lowest once rock, wet soils and import/export show up.

1. Self-performed or brokered?

Ask who owns the equipment and who runs it — dozers, excavators, scrapers, compactors, trucks, GPS grade control. Self-performing contractors control schedule and avoid stacked markups.

2. Experience with St. Louis soils

Fat clays and moisture decide whether a pad passes proctor tests. Look for talk of drying/discing or soil stabilization, undercut-and-replace vs. stabilizing in place, winter and spring working windows, and rock/shale in parts of Jefferson and St. Louis counties.

3. Cut/fill balance and dirt management

Ask how quantities were calculated, whether the site balances, where export goes and import comes from.

4. Stormwater and permitting

Most commercial sites need a land disturbance permit and erosion/sediment control. Ask who installs and maintains silt fence, inlet protection and construction entrances, and who handles inspections.

5. Utilities and trenching in the same scope

Sites move faster when one contractor handles mass grading plus storm, sanitary and water lines. Ask whether they self-perform site utilities and trenching, and how they verify existing lines.

6. Safety program

Ask for EMR, trench safety approach (sloping, benching, trench boxes) and competent-person assignments.

7. Clear proposals

Quantities, unit prices for undercut and rock, testing responsibility, dewatering, import/export assumptions and exclusions.

8. References on similar projects

Comparable size and type — industrial pads, data centers, subdivisions, municipal work.

FAQ

What does an earthwork contractor do?
Clearing, stripping, mass excavation, cut and fill, building pads, fine grading, and often trenching, utilities and erosion control.
Earthwork vs. excavation contractors?
The terms overlap; earthwork usually means moving and compacting large volumes to grade, excavation can also mean digging for foundations or utilities.
How long does earthwork take?
Depends on acreage, soils, weather and balance — weeks for small pads, months for large industrial sites.
