MSD & Municipal Sewer

The contractor
MSD projects
are built around.

From sump manhole cleanouts to bioretention basins to full sanitary reconstruction — Kuesel self-performs the heavy civil work that keeps the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District running. Certified utility crews, MSD-spec materials, and a closeout package the inspector signs the first time.

What We Self-Perform

The full MSD scope —
under one roof.

One crew, one schedule, one point of accountability. We don't farm out the work that protects your sewer district's reputation.

Sanitary & Storm Sewer Construction

Mains, laterals, interceptors, and inlets installed to MSD spec. Bedded, jointed, mandrel-tested, and air- or vacuum-tested before backfill. Trench safety and traffic control handled in-house.

Sump Manhole Cleanouts

Sediment, debris, and standing-water cleanout on sump manholes — combined sewer relief, trunk lines, and CSO outfalls. Vacuum extraction, channel restoration, and benching repaired to flow spec.

Bioretention Basin Construction

Engineered soil media, underdrain piping, weirs, energy dissipation, and native planting beds built to MSD's BMP standards. We can self-perform the full scope — excavation through final stabilization.

Manhole & Structure Rehab

New cast-in-place and precast manholes, doghouse manholes over existing main, ring & cover resets, chimney seals, invert reshaping, and bench repair. Drop connections built to engineer detail.

Erosion & Sediment Control

MSD Phase II compliant E&S plans implemented and maintained — silt fence, inlet protection, stabilized construction entrances, and SWPPP-ready logs handed off at closeout.

Standards Compliance & Testing

Every joint, grade, and structure verified to the MSD Standard Construction Specifications. Pre-pour inspections, density and proof-roll logs, deflection testing, and as-built submittals delivered on schedule.

Bioretention Basins

MSD's preferred
stormwater BMP.

Bioretention basins capture, slow, and filter the first flush of stormwater runoff before it hits the combined sewer. MSD Project Clear has made them a cornerstone of the region's wet-weather compliance — and Kuesel builds them to last.

Whether it's a single subdivision basin or a multi-acre regional facility, we handle excavation, underdrain installation, engineered soil media, weirs, riprap, and the final plant-bed stabilization that gets the basin accepted.

01

Excavation to subgrade

Basin shape cut to engineered grade, side slopes dressed, and subgrade scarified for media contact. Spoil hauled off or stockpiled per the SWPPP.

02

Underdrain & cleanouts

Perforated PVC underdrains bedded in washed stone, wrapped in filter fabric, and tied to the outlet structure. Cleanouts brought to grade for long-term maintenance access.

03

Engineered media placement

Sand, compost, and topsoil blended to MSD's bioretention soil media spec, placed in lifts, and tested for infiltration rate before planting.

04

Inlets, weirs & overflow

Stone forebays, level spreaders, and concrete weirs set to design elevation so the basin treats first flush and safely bypasses larger storms.

05

Native planting & stabilization

Plug planting, hardwood mulch, and temporary irrigation coordinated with the landscape subcontractor. Erosion control blankets installed until vegetation establishes.

06

As-built & turnover

GPS as-built of basin grades, structures, and underdrain runs. Maintenance plan and inspection log handed off to the owner or MSD acceptance team.

Sump Manhole Cleanouts

Standing water,
solved.

Sump manholes on combined sewers, trunk lines, and CSO structures fill with sediment, grit, and standing water that compromise flow and inspection access. Our hydrovac and utility crews clean them out, restore the bench and channel, and rebuild the structure if the masonry has failed.

  • Vacuum extraction of sediment, debris, and standing water
  • Bench and channel restoration to original flow line
  • Chimney seal, ring & cover reset, and frame adjustment
  • Confined-space entry crews — OSHA compliant
  • Bypass pumping coordination for live mains
  • Pre- and post-cleanout CCTV inspection on request
Standards & Compliance

Built to spec.
Inspected once.

Every joint, grade, and structure is verified before backfill. Our QC documentation matches what the MSD inspector and engineer expect — so projects close out without rework.

  • MSD Standard Construction Specifications — sanitary, storm & combined sewer
  • MSD Project Clear BMP Manual — bioretention, detention, infiltration trenches
  • MoDOT Standard Specifications for traffic-impact work
  • ASTM C76, C443, F477, D3034, F679 — pipe & joint testing
  • Missouri DNR Phase II Stormwater (SWPPP) compliance
  • City of St. Louis & St. Charles County right-of-way permitting
